Caldoria Dream Sequence Animatic: Brand New Music and sound effects!

Hello!

I'm really pleased to be able to bring you a taster of some of the new music that is being composed for the Journeyman remake.  It has been composed by a very good friend of mine, and I believe it fits both the style and imagery of the animatic.

I won't give too much away at this point, however I will say that I am very, VERY excited to hear the rest of the music as it arrives!

As always, please feel free to comment - let me know what you think of the imagery and the music!

Enjoy!

  1. Really love the music in this sequence - it has that airy, dream-like quality that a scene like this needs - perfect!

this is cool, but still has a little ways to go. (ok i just looked at it on youtube and realized it is an animatic, oops... much of this review below might not apply)

    modeling

The modeling of the buildings is good. i really like the circular buildings. however it goes by a little fast to be fully appreciated. the outer dome around the city still needs a little work. that black band needs to be subdivided and smoothed. also the outside dome looks a little unsmoothed too.

    texturing

The texturing in this sequence is not perfect, although i really like the white windows on the buildings. the dome especially looks a bit like dirty plastic. you might consider increasing the mirror, decreasing the alpha and increasing the specularity. i would also recommend adding a hdri map of some clouds to this scene. it would make it look so much more realistic. you could even experiment with making your own clouds. blender 2.5 has a cloud generator script you could play around with.

    camera motion

the camera motion as well is good, but not amazing. first off you need to correct the camera going through the black band. it is an easy fix and looks really bad at this point. also it is a little choppy. it speeds up considerably a little before going through the dome.

    music

the music is, for the most part, awesome. however i would recommend doing something to the music when the explosion happens. i would suggest making a big crash, a cymbal, or changing the music in a big way, especially if you are going for surprise. because at the moment the viewer is very shocked and surprised when the city explodes. I know that i jumped a little bit. if you are not going for that big shock or if you are just going for a surreal explosion, i might suggest that you take out the explosion sound effect, and perhaps make the explosion white, or even a white explosion followed by a fade to white effect.

the explosion itself also needs a little work. blender has an impressive particle engine and recently a smoke simulator. it is amazing what kind of explosions you can make. you might even want to try adding an explode modifier to some of the buildings for some shrapnel.

overall this scene is impressive and well made, but still has some things that could be changed to make it even better.

  3. Hello Avery,

Many thanks for your lengthy and thorough feedback! I put the animatic together to check that the shot would work, work out rough camera limits, check to see if a HDR image could be used to light a scene where the camera travelled such a big distance through the shot.

Rest assured that I am going back and modelling all of Caldoria from scratch (see more recent post for details). I am intending to model all relevant buildings and grass areas, including the Cyrollan ship. Any buildings to fill the background will be made up of the ones you see in the animatic.

However, I do take all of your points onboard, and will use your post as a checklist when creating and animating the full version of the shot.

    Thanks again!

    Andy
